Higher Education and choosing a career path plays a fundamental part in being a student at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy. Life beyond school can seem daunting and students seem to be faced with an ever-increasing number of options and demands for their attention. Through a structured programme, developed to raise aspirations at all levels and to provide support, GNSA’s students go on to excel both at university and in the world of work beyond. The vast majority gain places at their first choice of university. To assist with Careers guidance, GNSA works with EDT to provide impartial one to one career advice interviews with follow up action plans, drop-in sessions and career guidance at Parent Evenings.
A targeted programme of events to encourage students to start thinking about their career choices are introduced from Year 7 onwards. Bulletins providing details of opportunities where students can further explore Higher Education and Career options, as well as extending their knowledge of particular subjects and particular skill areas, are sent out on a regular basis and time is spent in tutor groups discussing careers. Students have continual access to our up-to-date careers library and online resources for information ranging from Apprenticeships, Colleges, and University.
Our Work Related Learning resources, such as CV templates and tips on how to make successful applications and interviews are built into our Key Stage 3 and 4 PSHE programme. Students will receive information through lessons, assemblies, and small group workshops on different career paths and entry routes. GNSA’s careers provision aims to enable students to make informed, realistic choices about their future. The school is currently setting its framework against the ‘Gatsby Benchmarks’.
